The Indian leather Industry occupies a place of prominence in the Indian economy in view of its substantial export earnings, employment generation and growth. There has been increasing emphasis on its planned development, aimed at optimum utilization of available raw material for maximizing the returns particularly from exports. The export of leather and leather products increased manifold over the past decades. The export increased from Rs. 290 mn in 1956-57 and from Rs. 30760 mn in 1991-92 to Rs. 140007.33 mn in 2007-08.
Today the industry ranks 8th in the export trade in terms of foreign exchange earnings of the country. The composition of export of leather and leather products from India has undergone a structural change during the last three decades, from merely an exporter of raw material in the sixties to that of value added products in the nineties. The value added finished products presently constitute around 80% of the total export from the Industry, which was near 7% in 1956-57.

11-DEC-08 The Indian leather industry is shrinking due to the global economic meltdown. Leading players fear a 25-30 percent drop in exports and job losses in the long run. "As footfall in global stores like Wall-Mart, Marks and Spencer have declined, it is impacting sales badly and in turn export is suffering," S.S. Kumar, chairman of the city-based Government College of Engineering and Leather Technology, told IANS. In the four weeks of December and the first two weeks of January, all these stores experience around 30-35 percent of the total yearly footfall. This year the footfall has been far short till the third week of December, Kumar added.
Added Mani Almal, managing director of APL Polyfab Pvt Ltd, which manufactures footwear components and gives it to exporters: "We have not experienced any order cancellation yet, but clients are asking for delay in shipments and extension of credit lines." The business scenario in leather industry till November was not affected as the order books were filled, he said. "It will definitely be affected in the coming months and we think there will be almost no orders after January." Sethi said the industry was hopeful that something better would happen in the future. It was talking with the government on duty drawbacks, licensing, import and marketing polices as well as loans and credit.

The stands were busy on the first working day of the India International Leather Fair (IILF) in Chennai, India on February 1. The show which is approximately 10% bigger by area this year underlines India as a major global market for the leather and leather products industries.
This year marks the 25th edition of the show and was officially opened on January 31 by Dayanidhi Maran, Indian minister of textiles. The show covers three halls and two portable hangers at the Chennai Trade Centre and most exhibitors were very happy with the visitor numbers on the first day of the show.
'India has become such important market for us that we started manufacturing leather chemicals here directly in 2009', Ramon Segura, Europe sales and marketing manager - leather for chemical makers, Pulcra. India is fast becoming the biggest market for leather and leather products after China and exports were worth US$3.6 billion for 2008/09.
Although the IILF retains a strong Indian flavour the international presence is growing and a number of international exhibitors were present, either directly or through their locals agents or representatives. The IILF is now one of the most important shows in the tanning industry.
Following the first day of the show, invited guests were treated to an evening fashion show at the Taj Coromandal hotel in downtown Chennai. Fashions featured Indian made leather footwear, garments and leather goods
